Clarity through ‘The Clearing’. Wolf Alice defines their new mature era.

As the new year arrives, it only means the wait for Thai fans is finally over. Alt-rock quartet Wolf Alice is currently touring in Asia and set to perform in Bangkok on January 11 at Ambience Space after their first show in 2018.

Formed in 2010, the awards-winning group from the UK consists of lead vocalist and guitarist Ellie Rowsell, guitarist Joff Oddie, drummer Joel Amey and bassist Theo Ellis.

The Noize Magazine had an opportunity to speak with Theo Ellis about the band’s latest album, working process and the excitement for the upcoming concert in Bangkok.

Gain Clarity to See Clearly

As Wolf Alice released the fourth studio album named The Clearing on 22 August 2025, the title of this album offers a sense of renewal to the more mature era of the group. Ellis also metaphorically shared the insight on this album as the point where they finally reach a clarity or a moment to break and reflect after an endless journey into the forest.

“We’ve been in a touring band for a long time, now we’re entering our 30s, and we’ve experienced pretty much the whole of our adult lives together,” he said.“I don’t speak for Ellie, but there are lots of points of reflection on different things that have changed in our personal lives. To me, it feels like a kind of transitional album, like a bit of a change in the way that we weigh on the band. And I think ‘The Clearing’ is a good summary.”

Ellis decided to choose the final track called ‘The Sofa’ as the song that best encapsulates the essence of this album thanks to its unique palette of sounds. He said that it was the last song that Wolf Alice recorded, and everyone already had been quite restrained up until that point.

At first, they planned not to use loads of instrumentation, but the direction suddenly shifted and this song ended up as the final version that audiences listened to.

“At the very end, we were like whatever. Get the strings out and do everything. And I just love that. I love the lyrics. I think Ellie’s really disarmingly funny and charming. I really love playing this song as well. It is always a great moment for us.”

Howl for Change

In this album, the track ‘Safe in the World’ represents the meaning of finding your own sanctuary amid the chaotic world. He said it is a daily struggle to find any form of inner peace regardless of what is happening right now as we speak, especially when there is so much going on that is so terrible.

Wolf Alice always uses their platform to voice out opinions against injustice in the society which included helping grassroot artists in the UK, signing an open letter of solidarity to the transgender community as well as showing support for Palestine during their performance at the Glastonbury Festival last year.

“People and artists in particular have been really amazing at speaking up for injustice at a time where maybe media outlets and people in charge have not been doing a good job of that,” Ellis said.

“It is a struggle to find inner peace, but I find reassurance about how incredible the musicians and artistic communities are for speaking up on behalf of other people when what is going on in the world seems so heavy and is so difficult and is so nuanced to talk about.”

This year, fans can expect to see Wolf Alice attend more charity concerts in the UK for raising awareness on important topics including the rights of transgender community att Trans Mission: A Solidarity Concert on March 11.

He said that the band will play a couple of acoustic songs at the concert and there are incredible artists in the lineup, so the concert will be really fun.

Then, Wolf Alice will join Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall on March 29 for the non-profit organization that provides cancer care and support for young people facing cancer.

It is an honor to go and play in a venue like that. And obviously both of those events are for amazing causes that the group is looking forward to, he added.

Bangkok Bloom Baby Bloom

The group first visited Bangkok for a music festival in 2018, now the band will make a grand return for their own headline show to showcase the contrast between early-twenties Wolf Alice and the mature band they become.

Ellis said that the band has been working very hard on creating a show whether the way they perform as well as balance the songs from the past and new ones on a setlist.

“It’s the same people, just a little bit different with new experiences, and that has got us where we are. I can’t wait to come to Thailand. I’m so excited about that. It’s going to be amazing.”

The last time in Bangkok he and Ellie visited the night market and somehow ended up next to the DJ who played dubstep in the party which was a very fun experience.

I would love to go outside of Bangkok and go to some of the islands as well, he added.

When it comes to his memorable Thai dishes, Massaman curry, Tom Yum and Larb are among his favorites, but he might give the famous Mango Sticky Rice a try during the tour in Thailand as well.

Lastly, Ellis on behalf of the whole Wolf Alice band also shared messages for Thai fans who are waiting for them to visit Bangkok once again.

“I and we love you. Thank you very much for waiting. It’s been too long. We should have been back sooner and when we do get there, if you’re coming to the show, it’s going to be one big celebration altogether. Can’t wait to see you.”
